movie line up

Movies seen this week.

Local Hero: Texas oil company rep is sent to Scotland to buy land for an oil drilling project. Plan goes awry due to sweet and simple nature of rural Scots and proves the latent good heartedness of corporate tycoons, one of whom is Burt Lancaster. (predictability you don't mind. endearing 80s hair cuts.)

The Big One: Michael Moore's book tour. Worth renting for the clips of Steve Forbes who is certifiably freaky in the eye dept. (He never blinks.) The chairman of Nike typifies the insanity of corporate America. (who would want to trade their life to be that guy? triple ugh.) The lady from Procter and Gamble twitches like the wicked witch of the east in Oz, but relaxes when the conversation comes round to what Tide can do for your clothes. A source of pride for the woman.

(P.S. powdered Tide contains finely ground glass...it shreds clothes gradually)

Will be watching, sometime this weekend:

The Celebration - It's beautifully rendered, brilliant and true and has been at the top of my list of favourites ever since I first saw it in 1999.

and

Rashomon by Akira Kurosawa. Because it's been awhile.

New site: Filmbrain.

Quote of the day, courtesy of Uncle Bob.

"We get it, Mel. ... You're pissed because the Irish killed Jesus. Sheesh. Enough already." I give it two thumbs and a flaccid penis down.

Naturally, U.B. was attacked by a vigilant and humourless Christian for the entry. Repeatedly.

and do pay a visit to Frankenstein's page for the Bush/Cheney paid-for campaign support posters. Works of art, all. I wouldn't mind doing a little Warhol number with them in my front hall.
